Siracusa

Siracusa is a splendid city on the Sicilian coast which was defined by Cicero as “ the most beautiful city of Magna Graecia ”. It was, in fact, a cultural capital from the Greek age up to the Renaissance and Baroque period. A city with a thousand facets where the visitor can take a dip in the past to discover history, passing through the various monuments in Greek, Roman and Baroque style.

The real way, however, to get to know the city better is to go to the Island of Ortigia which represents its beating heart and where you can visit:

  • Cathedral of Syracuse, which stands where the old temple dedicated to Athena once stood. It is one of the most beautiful examples of Sicilian Baroque. It is located in Piazza Duomo which is a treasure trove of elegant palaces and solemn churches;
  • Palazzo Vermexio , where you can have fun finding the little gecko that Vermexio carved in the left corner of the building;
  • Church of Santa Lucia alla Badia , the church dedicated to the Syracusan patroness which houses the work of Caravaggio “The burial of St. Lucia”;
  • the Temple dedicated to Apollo , the oldest Doric stone temple in Sicily. Click here to find out more.

In addition, among the various activities, you cannot miss a nice walk along the Alfeo seafront to get to the Maniace Castle from where you can also enjoy the panoramic view of the coast. Another place to visit is the Archaeological Park of Neapolis , where you can visit the Greek Theater , the Latomia del Paradiso (under the theater) where the curious Ear of Dionysus is located, a huge rock characterized by a curious acoustic effect. Finally, in addition to this purely historical and cultural tour, Syracuse also offers other more “worldly” possibilities including:

  • Take a boat ride on the Ciane River ;
  • Attend a show of the Opera dei Pupi ;
  • Reach the Vendicari Reserve ;
  • Shopping at the Noto Market ;
  • Strolling in the Graziella district ;
  • Dive into the Sicilian sea for a refreshing swim;
  • Taste the famous fried pasta with breadcrumbs and anchovies or tuna alla ghiotta .
