Palmarola

Palmarola is a real natural oasis, the so-called “Neverland” that leaves anyone who comes to visit it speechless. With its turquoise waters it is considered one of the most beautiful islands in the Mediterranean which is part of the Archipelago of the Pontine Islands of the Tyrrhenian Sea . The island can be seen little by little and mainly by sea, it is in fact practically uninhabited and not very busy, which makes it particularly fascinating.

Despite this it is still possible to visit some monuments on the island including:

  • The Cathedral , it is a rock formation that recalls the architecture of the Gothic cathedrals with pillars and arches. A series of long, narrow caves carved into the rocks that rise up from the turquoise water and offer spectacular scenery. It is very suggestive to explore the caves by swimming and with a mask and admire the incredible play of light that is created between water and rocks.
  • Cala Tramontana , a set of rocks that includes: Scoglio Scuncillo , so called because of its resemblance to a shell, the I Piatti and Le Galere rocks, made up of obsidian, pure glass in its natural state, with a black and glossy color. In prehistoric times, these materials were employed to with built tools for everyday life and weapons for hunting.
  • Cala Brigantina , a protected bay full of ravines, rock tunnels, sea caves to explore underwater and rocks. Here you can find the  Scoglio Suvace so called for its shape similar to a fish.
  • Punta di mezzogiorno , this area of imposing stacks in the middle of the sea, which looks towards the south, welcomes visitors arriving in Palmarola. Among the caves and marine rocks, the “Pallante” stack also appears, where it is possible to admire the home of a rare colony of shearwaters.
  • La Forcina , this splendid area of Palmarola has great naturalistic and geological importance. On its stones is written the history of stratifications and lava flows of the island that have occurred over the past years. The great passage of the hairpin is also the starting point to reach, with small boats, the nearby Grotta del Gatto. In this rock there is a spring of fresh water that is released into the sea. It should be noted that Palmarola is also a favorite place for trekking lovers who go to the volcanic island to walk the paths among its mountain ranges and to climb among nature until reaching panoramic points to admire enchanting scenery.

After a visit or an excursion, you can enjoy a refreshing bath in the crystal clear waters and in the best beaches of the island:

  • Maga Circe beach
  • Vricci beach
  • Cala brigantina
  • Grottelle beach
  • Cala del Porto
