Relaxing holiday on Monte Amiata

A relaxing holiday on Mount Amiata which was generated over 180,000 years ago by volcanic eruptions. The first traces of life date back to the Paleolithic, as attested by the rock paintings of the Grotta dell'Arciere . Since then, through the various eras, Monte Amiata has always attracted to itself different populations who have adored it as the Mother Mountain or exploited it as an invaluable source of material and spiritual resources and who have made it for this, a territory rich in legends and traditions. From the Etruscans to the Romans, from the Middle Ages – to which almost all the settlements still present today date back – to the modern era, with Davidian mysticism and mining exploitation. The folk and cultural heritage of Monte Amiata constitutes a fascinating world, at times mysterious, where the past and the present come together to give life to museums, gardens, parks, festivals, parties and celebrations. It is not possible to tell the ancient history of the volcano in a few lines: the only way to discover it is to live it and let yourself be conquered by it. There will be important moments to savor typical products and recipes of the territory.

In evidence:

  • Good Table based on local products and traditional recipes;
  • Ancient medieval villages, mining museums and Abbeys to discover;
  • Regenerate yourself in nature;
  • Take some time for yourself.

1° day

Expected arrival around 10:00, departing from the ancient village of Abbadia San Salvatore, one of the hidden treasures of Tuscany. Visit to the Abbey which, together with the suggestive underground crypt, offers an interesting itinerary, rich in history and precious objects such as the Codex Amiatinus, the oldest illuminated Bible in Latin and the Irish Scotus, one of the nine remaining examples. The building founded in the eighth century by the Lombard King Rachis on his way to Rome along the Via Francigena, stands in the place where the sovereign had the apparition of the Savior.
Followed by a guided tour of the Mining Museum Park today testimony of the recent industrial past of Abbadia San Salvatore: in the mid-19th century, the discovery of cinnabar in Monte Amiata started a revolution that transformed the small village into one of the most important mining centers of the world. The multimedia and sensory journey will transport you back in time and make you live the miner's experience. Lunch in a typical restaurant of the traditional cuisine of "Abbadia". You will then continue to Radicofani where you will visit the small village with its fascinating 'Rocca' - the famous stronghold of Ghino di Tacco - from which you can admire a 360-degree view of the Amiata-Val d’Orcia.
In the afternoon, departure for Bagni Filippo, where you can relax and unwind in the warm sulphurous waters of the Amiata. You can also take a walk along the spring water course that runs alongside the small village. Afterwards, return to the hotel, dinner and overnight stay.

From the hotel you will head towards the medieval village of Seggiano, perched on a slope surrounded by olive trees and after a visit to the church of charity and the historic village, you will visit the olive tree in the cistern, the first world-class scientific and experimental project that represents the translation into practice of the Principle on plant communication methods. The route will take you to the Ancient Ceccherini Hypogeum Oil Mill, where time seems to have stopped and the structure erected on three levels will allow you to understand a first innovative example of a machine building. Visit to Olearia - modern oil mill with tasting of Seggianese olive oils (native cultivar). It will be possible to buy production oil. Lunch to delight the palate at the local restaurant. Visit to Daniel Spoerri's garden. It is a Contemporary Art park that extends over 8 hectares with over 100 installations.
