The Museo dell’Opera, inserted into the same bulk constituted by “Duomo Vecchio” and “Duomo Nuovo” is one of the most ancient private museums established in Italy. It was founded in 1869 and inside of it we can find many artworks from the Cathedral and from churches of the diocese were kept, they document the history and the artistic culture of Siena. In the museum two complex of the utmost importance for the Italian art history are kept: the sculptures carved by Giovanni Pisano for the façade of the Cathedral and the Maestà by Duccio di Buoninsegna created for the high altar.
The Libreria Piccolomini houses inside a precious cycle of frescoes painted by Pinturicchio between 1503 and 1508. A cycle of exceptional pictorial quality where the maestro had illustrated ten episodes of the file of Pius II using the inexhaustible wealth of his narrative and chromatic registers.
Porta del cielo
The cathedral opens his door at the very peak of the building: a series of locals never open to the public, in which no one couldn’t enter for centuries with the exception of workers directed by the most important architects that have alternated over centuries. Once above the starry vaults, it is possible to walk “above” the holy temple and admire evocative panoramic views “inside” and “outside” the Cathedral. The “porta del cielo” opens to visitor as they were climbing a stairway appeared in a dream to Giacobbe who, once he woke up, exclaimed: “This is the real house of God, this is the door of the sky”.
