According to an ancient legend, a daughter of Frederick II who resided in the castle saw the Madonna delle Grazie, who expressed the desire to have a church built on the hill in front of the fortress. Nicastro was founded in the Byzantine period. Henry VII, the rebellious son of Emperor Frederick II, was held prisoner in the Norman castle which was then seriously damaged by the earthquake of 1638. To see the cathedral of SS. Pietro e Paolo, rebuilt in Baroque style after the earthquake. A walk in Corso Numistrano is recommended. in the afternoon continue to Tiriolo. The small village is 690 m above sea level. The German historian Armin Wolf has been an honorary citizen of Tiriolo since 2015. He supports the thesis that the Phaeacians of the Odyssey were resident in Calabria and places their capital near Tiriolo. In 1640 a bronze plaque was erected here with the text of the "Senatus consultus de Bacchanalibus" of 186 BC. the original is in Vienna. The small museum where traditional costumes are exhibited is worth a visit.
In Corso Garibaldi there are several buildings that can be admired through elegant portals and windows. The ancient fortress is dominated by the ruins of the castle, around which the historic center of sixteenth-century buildings has developed.
