Assisi, one of the most beautiful villages in Italy, the destination of numerous pilgrimages, is certainly the most sacred village. Land of origin of the revolutionary Saint Francis of Assisi , the man who decided to strip himself of all his possessions to lead a more charitable and poor life and who founded the Franciscan order. Here are the monuments not to be missed if you are in the city:

  • The Basilica of San Francesco , a majestic work designed to amaze and excite the visitor, recognized as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO. The Basilica is made up of two parts, the Lower Church inside which houses the remains of the Saint; and then the Upper Church, where it is possible the magnificent frescoes by Cimabue that tell the Crucifixion, the Scenes of the Apocalypse and the Stories of St. Peter, but above all the cycle of frescoes, executed and supervised by Giotto , which tells some scenes from the life of Saint Francis.   • Eremo delle Carceri , a sacred and solitary place where St. Francis used to go to pray and meditate. It is the perfect place for anyone who wants to fully enjoy the peace and tranquility that this place is able to convey.
  • Basilica of Santa Chiara , built in the 13th century after the death of Santa Chiara, founder of the order of the Poor Clares who, fascinated by the preaching of St. Francis, fled home at the age of 18 to embrace religion.
  • Cathedral of San Rufino,the main place of worship in Assisi dedicated to the patron saint of the town.
  • Church of Santa Maria sopra Minerva , an ancient temple of Roman origin that fascinates thousands of visitors every year.
  • Temple of Minerva , now transformed into a church.

In addition to all these places of worship that attract pilgrims from all over the world, Assisi also has monuments of great historical and cultural importance, the main ones are:

  • The Roman Amphitheater , which traces the ancient past of the city;
  • Rocca Maggiore , the fortress where Frederick II of Swabia also lived. Today it represents the ideal place to admire and photograph Assisi in all its splendor:
  • Piazza del Comune, built on what was once the Roman forum of the city, today can be visited along an interesting museum itinerary. It is a very suggestive square: here, in fact, some of the monuments and symbolic buildings of Assisi are located and overlooked. On the square we can find: Palazzo del Capitano del Popolo with the nearby Torre del Popolo, the Palazzo dei Priori, now the Town Hall and the Palazzo delle Poste .
